Another resident inspired reason to love St. Clair West: The new WychCraft Market.
Fri Apr 3, 2009

The latest addition to the renaissance of St. Clair West is the new WychCraft Market. Founded by Ward 21 resident Tracy Call, the Market promises Saturday shoppers a lively outdoor venue with an ever-changing mix of emerging and established artisans, designers and artists offering distinctive products.

The WychCraft Market will feature unique gifts and decor items, clothing, edibles and home staples, from a roster of Artisans who rotate weekends on and off throughout the season. New vendors are always welcomed. Live musical entertainment will be featured regularly, as will information tables hosted by local not-for-profit and charitable organizations.

"This market will bring even more vibrancy to St. Clair West. Ontario's Artisans bring passion and a touch of magic, to their creations, providing shoppers with the opportunity for unique finds and purchasing with a conscience." said Call. "Add to that a conversation with a friend over coffee and a tasty treat, a little live music, and you've got yourself an enchanting afternoon."

Ward 21 residents have established many of St. Clair West's cultural and social offerings, contributing heavily to the area's reputation as a great place to live, shop and dine.

"My community gives me a lot," said Call. "My goal is to enrich the neighbourhood while encouraging people to habitually buy hand-made first. It's important to support Toronto's artisans, designers and artists. Without them, the city would lose a lot of it's charm."

Roscoe Handford, community animator and manager of the Stop Community Food Centre's Green Barn Farmers Market at the Artscape Wychwood Barns, agreed that WychCraft will benefit the neighbourhood: "The WychCraft Market is certain to be a lively addition to our great neighbourhood. A craft market by an Artwalk artist, I know I'll be checking it out each week!" she said.

WychCraft complements the year round Green Barn Farmers' Market, which opens early Saturday mornings and focuses on local, sustainable, organic and artisan foods.

The WychCraft Markets runs every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May 23 until October 31 on the lawn of St. Michael & All Angels Church (611 St. Clair Avenue West at Wychwood Avenue). The site was the former location of the Green Barn Farmers' Market, before it moved to its home at the Artscape Wychwood Barns last November.

Rev. Jeffrey Brown, minister at St. Michael & All Angels Church, welcomed the opportunity to have another market on the church's lawn. "It's a wonderful opportunity to continue to meet and interact with the people of the neighbourhood," he said.

Celtic-Folk duo Heather Chappell and Vince Peets will entertain the crowd at the market's opening day on Saturday, May 23, with some jigs and reels.

In addition to providing artisans a "resale vendor free" marketplace on a busy main street, charities and not-for-profits can raise awareness with a free table at the Market. Organizations wishing to book can do so by calling Tracy directly. Artisans can find Vendor application packages on the market's website.
